Wednesday 7 January 2015
I spent six nights in Skye just before Christmas. There was a lovely
mix of weather – snow on the hils some mornings, nice golden
light at sunset one day, and plenty of opportunities to practice
photography in the rain! Most of these are quite well known
locations. One that perhaps ...

A bit more about how I have been taking photographs in the rain... I
normally use a 16-35mm wide-angle lens on a full-frame body, and so I
can't get much protection from a lens hood. In any case, I normally
use Lee slot-in filters which could not be attached ...

A trip out to the Norfolk coast in the rain, going back to two of my
favourite locations to see what they look like in these conditions. I
had my umbrella clamped onto the tripod to keep everything dry, and
the bag hanging underneath to try to hold it all ...

Here's an image I have been working on for a few weeks. It is one of
the blocks at Happisburgh that used to be the foundations for the old
steps down to the beach. The steps were removed a few years ago after
the new ramp was constructed (and ...

A few different versions of an image I've been working on... This is out at Cley-next-the-Sea, where the road to the beach car park crosses the New Cut sluice. One from an earlier visit to see what the location looked like last week, and then a new version this ...

I just learnt that my image Beach Huts at Wells is on the
shortlist for the RPS International Print exhibition. The first round
of judging is done online, and now I need to actually make a print and
submit it. I have a larger copy of the picture at

I went to the Didcot
Railway Centre yesterday. These images are all from inside the
engine shed, taken with a Canon 85mm f/1.2 at f/1.2, trying to use the
shallow depth of field to keep part of the engine in sharp focus with
the surrounding workshop ...

Just heard back from the Southport
Photographic Society—seven images accepted out of sixteen
entries, including all four of my mono prints. Here's one image I was
particularly pleased about where perseverance paid off. The colour
original was not accepted when ...

I was giving a talk at Cambridge
Camera Club earlier this week, and that gave me an excuse to make
a consistent set of prints from some of my recent images. I thought I
would have a go at mounting the images on to board rather than cutting
window mounts ...

I went up to the Yorkshire Dales and took these images around the
limestone pavement avove Twisleton Scar End. It was raining for most
of the day but I got about an hour between the showers. The first and
last images are not quite mono conversions. I left the middle ...

This is an image from July 2012 of the tidal pool at Brixham in Devon
when high tide coincided with sunset. The water only went a few
inches above the floor in the foreground—I would like to go back
some time when the sides of the pool are completely ...

This is an image from March 2013 from the clock tower in St Mark's
Square, Venice. It is a composite of a few dozen hand-held exposures
on a basic point-and-shoot camera. I combined these on the computer
to give the effect of a long exposure, and selectively lightened parts ...
